What If Your Gear Doesn’t Match Your Skills?
By WEMountain
Winter is coming, and you know what that means: it’s time to dust off your gear and get ready for some epic riding! But before you venture into the snow-covered backcountry, there are a few crucial things we’d like you to consider about your gear.

When we say “gear,” we mean everything: your sports equipment, your navigation tools, and your rescue and survival gear. Each piece plays a vital role in ensuring your safety and enjoyment. So, take the time to inspect and upgrade where needed.
Your gear should be tailored to both your project and skill level: your equipment can make or break your mountain experience. It needs to be familiar, organized, in good repair and the right tool for the right job. Unsuitable equipment can significantly increase fatigue and therefore your ability to think clearly. Trust us; this isn’t a one-size-fits-all situation.
Rescue gear won’t eliminate avalanche risk, but it can reduce its consequences: In the event of an avalanche, the speed at which you can locate and uncover buried victims is critical to their survival. However, There’s no use in being over-equipped. It’s better to remain aware of your skill and knowledge level and never lose sight of the fact that rescue gear should never have to be used.

Gear is good, knowledge is vital: Think of education as your mental gear. Invest in resources that will enhance your understanding of yourself, the backcountry, safety protocols, and outdoor skills. Just like the right gear enhances your physical abilities, education enhances your mental abilities. It will allow you to better assess risks and make sound decisions.
What’s the bottom line? We want you to have the best possible backcountry experience this winter. And that starts with the right gear for your body and your mind. Don’t leave it to chance. Take a proactive step and invest in your safety and enjoyment.
Together, let’s make the mountain safer!
